British teenager Dina Asher-Smith ran a new national record in the women’s 100m by becoming the first-ever athlete from her country to go under 11 seconds at the London Anniversary Games.

Asher-Smith, 19, won her heat in 10.99, beating double world sprint silver medalist Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast. Dutch runner Dafne Schippers took the final from Blessing Okagbare in 10.92.

Another British athlete Shara Proctor, meanwhile, broke another national record in the ladies’ long jump by going out to 6m 98cm. That competition also contained Heptathlon medal hopes Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, with the former later entering a class 200m field.

That half lap race was taken by Jamaican newcomer Elaine Thompson in 22.1 seconds ahead of American Tori Bowie, while 400m expert Sanya Richards-Ross disappointed. Ennis-Hill was way down in eighth.

Men’s 800m world record holder David Rudisha continues to find Nijel Amos a thorny foe, losing to the Botswana athlete for the sixth time since his London Olympics triumph. The Kenyan again had to settle for second.

Proctor’s male counterpart Greg Rutherford, the Olympic Champion in the same stadium three years earlier, could only manage 8m 18cm and third place in the other long jump competition.

Reigning world and Commonwealth women’s 800m champion Eunice Jepkoech Sum continued her dominance of that event with Team GB’s Lyndsey Sharp snatching a third place finish behind Sifan Hassan.

Olympic pole vault champion Renaud Lavillenie was the only man over 6m in the delayed field competition, after torrential rain in London on Friday night forced the event to be pushed back.

World and Olympic men’s 400m Hurdles runner-up Michael Tinsley held off South African opponent LJ van Zyl to take a key victory ahead of Beijing in 49.02 seconds.

New Zealand’s Valerie Adams, the woman who has dominated shot put competitions during this decade, lost again after returning from an elbow problem. The Kiwi threw a best of 18m 59cm, with the USA’s Michelle Carter the only lady to go out over 19m.
