Is Jelle Vossen an ideal replacement for Danny Ings at Burnley?

Burnley’s bid to bounce straight back into the Premier League (9/2 with Coral for Championship promotion) has been bolstered by the arrival of former Belgium striker Jelle Vossen at Turf Moor.

The 26-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Clarets, after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms, having spent last season on loan at beaten play-off finalists Middlesbrough.

Aitor Karanka’s Teesside team reportedly had the option to purchase Vossen permanently up until March 31st, but instead waited to see whether they went up.

For Boro to lose one of their attacking talents to a promotion rivals is a big blow, especially as Championship player of the year Patrick Bamford has returned to parent club Chelsea following a season-long loan spell.

Sean Dyche has also lost a striker in now former England Under-21 international Danny Ings, however, so have Burnley secured the ideal replacement for him in Vossen?

Netting nine times in 42 appearances across all competitions for Middlesbrough cannot be considered a great return, but Karanka would often rotate players. The Clarets have a close-knit squad, so that sort of thing is out of the question.

Credit Burnley for showing some ambition, though. Vossen is a million miles away from their previous targets, especially when you consider Dyche got them into the Premier League on a shoestring.

Parachute payments mean they can compete for a different calibre of player than normal, and vying for Vossen is a real statement of intent not just to bank the money and be content.

Ings operated at his very best during his Turf Moore time playing off Wales target man Sam Vokes. Vossen is also capable of playing in this slightly withdrawn role, so that will stand him in good stead.

The Ings and Vokes partnership had a shared history, however, with both beginning their professional club careers at Bournemouth.

Vossen certainly has all the attributes to be a Clarets coup, as he has played at a much-higher level. Burnley are 14/1 shots for the Championship title, and if they are to lift the trophy then he will have plenty to do with it.
