Former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid marksman Diego Forlan has made a return to his boyhood club Penarol in Uruguay, a team in which his father was a star, lifting the Libertadores Cup and Intercontinental Cup in the 1960s.

Forlan has long been a fan of the club where he played as a boy, and the Uruguayan side are excited about his imminent arrival.

“With a surname linked to the club’s history, son of a champion of the Americas and the world with Penarol, Diego will wear the yellow and black as he did when he was a boy and dreamt of being a professional footballer,” the club stated.

The 36-year-old featured for the likes of Villarreal, Independiente in Argentina, Inter Milan, Brazil’s Internacional and of course the Red Devils and Atletico, during his career.

Following his return to Uruguay, here are five of Forlan’s best strikes for his various clubs and country (50/1 with Coral to win 2018 World Cup).

Germany 2010
In what was a hugely successful tournament personally for Forlan, the clinical forward discovered his best ever form to earn the coveted award of best player at the 2010 World Cup.

This was one of his best efforts against Germany, dispatching a deadly volley, as he guided his nation to the semi-finals that summer.

Ghana 2010
Another wonder goal from his collection during that sensational World Cup in South Africa, this time from a set-piece.

The former Red Devils striker stepped up and blasted in the opener against Ghana with deadly power and precision, with this superb free-kick.

Netherlands 2010
Yet another goal from 2010, with Forlan swiveling on to his left foot this time and sending an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net, giving the Dutch stopper no chance.

The journeyman forward was one of few players who could truly control the flight of the specially designed World Cup ball that summer, proved by this glorious goal against the Netherlands (18/1 to win Euro 2016).

Southampton 2002
During his underwhelming spell in the Premier League, Forlan endured a troublesome time in front of goal, but is most remembered for his double against Liverpool.

However, this sensational Saints strike was probably his best in a Man United shirt, before departing for ventures elsewhere.

Esportivo 2013
During the later stages of his career with Internacional, Forlan fired home this incredible long-range strike, proving he still possesses class as he heads home to join the club he played for as a young boy.
