Manchester United have been tipped to move for a new striker for quite some time and, with Robin van Persie now departing, coupled with an injury to Javier Hernandez, Louis van Gaal is set to up his pursuit of a new frontman for his ranks.

Wayne Rooney is set to lead the attack for the Red Devils next term on their hopeful return to the Champions League, providing they overcome a play-off clash, and are aiming to snap up wantaway Bayern Munich marksman Thomas Muller.

The 25-year-old World Cup winning German is seemingly an ideal replacement for departing Dutchman Van Persie, who is close to sealing his move to Turkish outfit Fenerbahce. The Red Devils are now 11/2 with Coral to lift the Premier League title next term.

Another potential departure could be Mexican hitman Javier Hernandez, who was recently ruled out of his nation’s hopeful Gold Cup campaign due to injury. The Old Trafford poacher is out-of-favour under Van Gaal and Europa League champions Sevilla are eyeing his services this summer.

Having already captured former Newcastle United and PSG midfielder Yohan Cabaye, Crystal Palace are hoping to acquire QPR frontman Charlie Austin, but will have to fork out at least £15m for his signing.

Elsewhere in London, Tottenham winger Andros Townsend is the subject of a transfer tug-of-war between top-flight clubs Aston Villa and Sunderland, with the England international wideman valued at £15m by his current employers.

Having taken over at Newcastle, Steve McClaren is closing in on summer target Aleksandar Mitrovic, with the 20-year-old Anderlecht striker reportedly set to become his first signing in charge. The Magpies are available at 11/4 to secure a top 10 finish next season.

Meanwhile, Stoke City recently looked like sealing the signing of Inter Milan playmaker and Switzerland international forward Xherdan Shaqiri, but there is a deadline on how long the club can wait before finally agreeing terms with the 23-year-old Serie A star.
