Liverpool have agreed to sign Manchester City’s out-of-contract midfielder James Milner on a free transfer, after personal terms were agreed for the England international at Anfield.

The 29-year-old who started his career at Leeds United, has also played for Newcastle United and Aston Villa as well as earning 53 caps for England, scoring one goal, against Moldova in 2012, and will join up with his new teammates on July 1 upon his current contract expiring at the Etihad.

He has scored 57 goals at club level, contributing 82 assists though is admired more for his work rate and versatility, able to play anywhere in midfield, as a striker or at full back.

With skipper Steven Gerrard having moved to MLS side LA Galaxy, there is somewhat of a hole in midfield, though Jordan Henderson is expected to take over, and his improvement over the last two seasons nullifies the departure of this departed Kop idol.

A move to the Reds will see Milner link up with England colleagues Henderson, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, if not for a short while at least, with the latter rumoured to be leaving the club, and the Reds are now 5/2 with Coral for a top four finish next term.

Milner’s presence in the starting XI would see the Reds with more steel and grit in midfield, which may get the best out of those around him, including Sterling if he stays.

Since the end of the Premier League campaign, which saw the club end a stuttering season with a disappointing sixth place finish, Liverpool have been linked with a host of players.

Milner won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the League Cup during his five years at City, and will undoubtedly bring a great deal of experience and quality to Brendan Rodgers’ ranks on the red half of Merseyside (20/1 to win the 2015/16 title).
