Redcar preview: Rozene can run her rivals ragged

| 26.05.2015

Rozene scored with something to spare last time out, and looks weighted to follow up in the 5f handicap on today’s eight-race card at Redcar (16.50).

The David Barron trained filly put in a career-best performance when making all and only having to be driven out to beat Lexington Place by a length at Ripon nine days ago.

Rozene was value for more than the winning margin, and is entitled to improve significantly for the outing as it was her first in 283 days.

The race was also an apprentice handicap, so Rozene escapes a penalty for the success and is able to race off an unchanged mark of 74.

That gives the daughter of Sleeping Indian, who is due to go up 5lb in future contests, outstanding claims from a handicapping perspective.

Rozene also has the services in the saddle of Rob Hornby, who partnered her at Ripon and is good value for his 5lb claim.

Taking it into account, Rozene looks to have plenty in hand on today’s rivals.

In the 1m handicap (15.20), Rocket Ronnie can take advantage of a drop in the weights to land an overdue success.

The gelding was a three-time winner in 2013 when trained by Dandy Nicholls, with the last of those successes coming at Beverley where he slammed Red Charmer by seven lengths off a mark of 74.

Rocket Ronnie got put up 10lb to 84 for that runaway success, and is now able to race off just 69.

That gives the five-year-old a massive shout at the weights, and Rocket Ronnie shaped as if coming to hand last time out when staying on in eye-catching fashion to finish fifth in a 7f contest at Wolverhampton on just his second start for trainer Ed McMahon.

The step back up to a mile, over which Rocket Ronnie he has notched all four of his career successes, is sure to suit and this looks a golden opportunity for the son of Antonius Pius to get back in the winners’ enclosure.
