Inter can take advantage of unlucky Genoa and steal Europa spot

It seemed as though Inter Milan’s season was all but over, with the San Siro side marooned in mid-table, while upcoming opponents and surprise Serie A package Genoa were storming to the last Europa League spot under former Nerazzurri coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

However, all that could be set to change, as the Griffin have befallen some back luck as it was announced the club has been refused a licence to play in continental competition, due to issues with the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which has not met UEFA stadium standards.

This means whichever club finishes seventh could now sneak into the Europa League instead. Currently, Genoa’s city rivals and stadium sharers Sampdoria stand to benefit, having already arranged alternative accommodation for potential Europa clashes, though Roberto Mancini’s Inter are just two points adrift of the Blucerchiati.

So, the Nerazzurri must take the spoils in Genoa to boost their chances of pinching a European place, and are 7/4 with Coral to do so having already smashed the Griffin 3-1 this season.

Inter have lost just one of their last 19 tussles with the Ligurian outfit, and have been beaten in just one of their past seven in Serie A.

Top Nerazzurri marksman Mauro Icardi has hit 24 across all competitions this term, and grabbed a consolation goal against Juve last time out, so is fantastic value at 5/1 to strike first, or 13/8 to fire home anytime.

Meanwhile, Argentine Icardi’s compatriot Rodrigo Palacio has two in his last three outings against his former club the Griffin, so is a tasty 2/1 to be on target anytime.

Genoa may still harbour hopes of turning their situation around, however unlikely, and ex-Inter coach Gasperini is unlikely to let his team falter now.

Speaking recently the Italian tactician told media: “My regret is that I was not given the time to work at Inter. The team was put together at the end of the summer and I was only allowed a few games.

“I was judged incompetent by people who were incompetent. I found a lot of incompetence at Inter. I saw some really terrible things here.”

Having slain their guests in Genoa last term, the Griffin are 8/5 to repeat that feat or 11/5 to clinch a draw on home soil.

Apparent Inter target Iago Falque is one of the hosts’ most potent attacking threats, and is 11/2 to net the opener after bagging a brace last time out, while Sassuolo-owned striker Leonardo Pavoletti is the same price to poach last.

Top tip: Icardi @ 5/1 to score first
