Husband and wife team up to win £200k for just a £8 racing bet

| 21.05.2015

A retired husband and wife from Warwickshire on Saturday teamed up for their weekly horse racing bet and won £209,518 for just an £8 stake. They now have the chance to win another £570,541 if they can pick a winner of one more race on Saturday.

The couple, who have been placing bets together on horse racing for many years, placed an £8 Tote Scoop 6 bet in Coral’s Lutterworth betting shop on Saturday morning. The bet required them to find the winners of six selected races.

Having placed the bet, the elderly couple then went out for the afternoon to shop for DIY equipment as they were decorating their house so did not watch the horse racing on television, and forgot to check the results. It was not until 9.30am on Sunday morning that the husband excitedly told his wife that they had won over £200,000.

“My father loved the horses and that’s where I get it from, and then when I first met my husband all those years ago he was just as keen on them, so betting on horses has always been part of my life”, explained the female Coral customer who, along with her husband, wishes to remain anonymous.

“We’ve been placing the Scoop 6 bet for years in fact my husband actually won it before, quite a long time ago. That time he won £11,000 and we were working then, so now we are retired winning this £200,000 couldn’t have come at a better time,” said the lady.

“We’ll spend it on holidays as with interest rates so low there’s not much point in saving it all. We won’t bother with stocks or shares as having won the money we’re not going to risk losing it. That would be stupid. We love going racing. The St Leger at Doncaster is one of our favourites and we like Stratford. I went to ladies day at Royal Ascot last year but I didn’t see a horse!” she said.

The couple now have a chance to win an additional £570,741 on Saturday if they can pick the winner of the Tote Scoop 6 Bonus race.

“You couldn’t meet a nicer, more deserving couple to win such a life-changing sum of money on the horses. They worked together on the selections, as they have done every week for many years, and can now enjoy spending their winnings together. And of course they still have a shot to win another half a million for which we wish them the best of luck”, said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.
