Frankie Dettori – 2000 Guineas
Since his debut ride in the 2000 Guineas back in 1991, Dettori has won the first Classic of the flat season twice for former employees Godolphin on Mark Of Esteem in 1996 and Island Sands on the July Course in 1999. The first of those came in a narrow photo finish when just beating Even Top by a short head with Bijou D’Inde only a head away back in third. The second was also a narrow success with Enrique thrusting home late but Dettori had enough in reserve to hold on.
Apart from those winners, Dettori doesn’t have the greatest of records in the race but bids to add to those successes with Moheet for Richard Hannon on Saturday, having chosen him over The Wow Signal who worked badly at Pontefract last week before that horse was withdrawn yesterday. Moheet has only raced twice, his first effort coming in a questionable Salisbury maiden albeit he was a taking winner when dotting up by seven lengths back last October.
He then took a big step up in class on his three year old debut when contesting the Group Three Craven Stakes over course and distance two weeks ago when finishing third behind Kool Kompany, beaten three and a quarter lengths. In an open Guineas, he goes in with every chance but he shaped in the Craven that a step up to ten furlongs would suit better than staying at a mile. His price of 20/1 is short enough with others looking to have stronger claims.

The 1000 Guineas has been a happy hunting ground for Dettori with him currently the second most successful jockey currently riding behind Keiren Fallon with three wins in the race – Fallon holding the current jockeys high with four victories. Cape Verdi was the first of those in 1998, a runaway winner who looked to have the world at her feet but a bad experience in the Derby left its mark on her and she never reached the heights she scaled in the Guineas. His second winner Kazzia was the last horse to do the Guineas/Oaks double whilst the third Blue Bunting went on to finish third at Epsom before going on to win the Irish Oaks at the Curragh.
Dettori aims for a fourth victory on Osaila for Richard Hannon Jr and she comes here with plenty of match experience which should hold her in good stead. Beaten on debut at Leicester, she went to Royal Ascot for the Albany where she wasn’t disgraced behind Cursory Glance when fifth. She then won twice at Doncaster and Ascot having a bit to spare on both occasions before meeting Cursory Glance again in the Moyglare Stud Stakes where she closed up on her compared to Royal Ascot, albeit still finishing fifth.
She was entitled to win the Tattersalls Two Year Old Fillies Trophy at Newmarket when clear best in the race before a solid effort in the Breeders Cup Fillies Juvenile when third behind Lady Eli. Her only start this season saw her beat New Providence in the Nell Gwyn, looking to have a fair bit in hand. Currently 8/1, she has stronger claims than Dettori’s 2000 Guineas ride Moheet and the step back up to a mile should hold no issues for this daughter of Danehill Dancer.
