Five possible replacements for star Man Utd keeper David de Gea

Manchester United (9/2 to win the 2015/16 Premier League title) are probably dreading the end of the season, as it will most likely signal a summer saga involving their star keeper David de Gea and Real Madrid.

As has happened so many times in the past, if Los Blancos want a player they will get him, no matter the cost, and the Madrid-born Spain international is reportedly top of their wishlist.

Many recent reports suggest that De Gea will leave this summer, and his actions after going off injured against Arsenal certainly suggested it too. With the stopper’s contract ending in 2016, the Red Devils will most likely want to cash in on their standout star this season, so Coral writers have come up with five possible replacements.

Following the 1-1 draw with the Gunners, De Gea Tweeted the following…

Asmir Begovic
Stoke City have done well to keep Bosnia keeper Begovic on their books for so long, after signing him from Portsmouth in 2010, as he has continuously been linked to higher profile clubs over the years.

Real Madrid are reportedly tracking him too, and United will be hoping they continue their pursuit of the 27-year-old so that they lower their interest in De Gea. He has a wealth of experience in the Premier League, though, and would be a fine replacement for the Spaniard.

Petr Cech
It is hard to believe that Cech is still just 32 years old, which in goalkeeper terms is when most are in their prime. The Czech centurion has been ousted from the number one spot at Chelsea which he held for a decade, as another young stopper Thibaut Courtois has been favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Premier League champions Chelsea have already sold one star to United in Juan Mata recently, and could do the same with Cech. He would certainly be a cheap and safe option for Louis van Gaal.

Samir Handanovic
Penalty-saving specialist Handanovic is another with more experience, at the age of 30, and the Slovenian stopper has gained many plaudits despite playing for fallen Italian giants Inter Milan. Again he would be a cheap option.

Hugo Lloris
However, United would have to dig deep into their pockets if they are to sign France captain Lloris from Spurs, as their owner Daniel Levy has a history of getting good money for his stars.

Lloris is similar in style to De Gea, with his cat-like reflexes, and is more of a commanding presence in the box too. The Frenchman is still just 28, and would be an excellent addition at Old Trafford.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Ter Stegen is the youngest keeper on this list by a good few years, at 22, and it remains to be seen if United want to take the risk on another youngster, as it took De Gea over a year to adjust to the Premier League.

There is no doubting the Germany international’s talent, although prone to the odd error, as he has been used in Barcelona’s successful Champions League campaign to date (they are odds-on 4/11 favourites), but is yet to feature in La Liga, with Claudio Bravo preferred.
