Spurs in summer scramble for Sassuolo sharpshooter Simone Zaza

| 12.03.2015

Tottenham, 11/2 with Coral for a top four Premier League finish, are supposedly chasing Sassuolo striker Simone Zaza and could make a summer move for the Serie A star.

Spurs reportedly tried to lure the former Sampdoria starlet to White Hart Lane in the winter window and could now return for the talented hitman again.

Mauricio Pochettino’s apparent plans could hit a road block in the shape of Italian giants Juventus, however. The Old Lady were co-owners Zaza before minnows Sassuolo snapped up his registration rights for around £5.3m last summer, and are said to be keen to exercise a buy-back clause and take the Italy international back to Turin.

Juve already have a host of talented attackers in their ranks, however, including the likes of Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Morata, so Zaza may prefer to move elsewhere.

Tottenham’s striker troubles, meanwhile, are well documented, so the north London club could surely offer more opportunities for first-team football.

Zaza would have the chance to partner in-form England Under-21 frontman Harry Kane, with out-of-favour Emmanuel Adebayor and misfiring Roberto Soldado among the squad players expected to be axed.

Azzurri capped Zaza is still just 23, and has impressed for the Neroverdi, striking eight times and providing two assists in 20 Serie A outings so far this season.

Speaking recently, Sassuolo chief executive John Carnevali, stated: “Juve asked us about Zaza in January. We told them that we would rather talk about this in June. Relationships are excellent between the two clubs and they already have an option to buy back the player.”

This would appear to put the Turin team in pole position for the young talent’s services, but recent reports have suggested that Zaza’s agent Christian Maifredi has flown to London for talks with Tottenham.

Carnevali certainly seems to believe the exciting forward, valued at around £12.6m, has plenty of options.

“It is being said that Simone must move to Juve but that isn’t necessarily the case as there are some foreign clubs looking at him as well, most notably Tottenham Hotspur, so we want to try and maximise the best deal for the football club,” added the Sassuolo bigwig.

Spurs are odds-on at 8/15 for a top six finish and Atalanta academy product Zaza could perhaps find himself combing with Kane in the Premier League sooner rather than later. Should Tottenham steal the starlet from under Serie A leaders Juve’s nose, Pochettino would certainly have reason to feel optimistic about the future.
