Southwell Preview: Minnie has a Mighty chance

SPORTSBOOK ODDS

Mighty Minnie has some strong form to her name and looks to have been found a nice opportunity to get off the mark in the 2m 5f maiden hurdle at Southwell today (4.20).

Trained by Henry Daly, the mare has only had five starts, and ran really well on the first of those at Bangor when staying on to finish runner-up to the very smart now 147-rated Bitofapuzzle in a 2m 1f bumper.

The six-year-old went on to finish a decent third in a similar contest at this venue, and has run three respectable races since being sent hurdling this season.

In the last of those, the sister to the stables’ former top class staying hurdler Mighty Man finished third to Saint John Henry in a 3m handicap hurdle at Bangor.

The victor, and runner-up Heathfield, have both come out and won since to give the form a strong look and Mighty Minnie may well appreciate the drop back in trip this afternoon as she led until being headed two from home.

A repeat of that effort is going to make Mighty Minnie hard to beat in this line-up, and with Richard Johnson in the saddle she can get the better of the favourite Taylor to land the spoils.

Trainer Peter Bowen has his team in good nick and Blue Talisman can provide him with another winner on handicap debut in the 2m 5f “hands and heels hurdle” (4.55).

The gelding was a fair performer on the flat when trained by Peter Easterby and shaped with promise on hurdling debut when third to Relentless Pursuit on good ground at Wetherby.

Blue Talisman then failed to build on that effort and was pulled-up on his next two starts, and also ran poorly last time out on debut for Bowen at Ffos Las.

However, the son of Alhaarth will relish the drying ground and looks a potential improver now tackling handicaps.

Connections are also fitting Blue Talisman with a tongue-tie and cheekpieces for the first time, and if they have the desired effect an opening handicap mark of 95 could well be on the lenient side.
