Five moments of madness, following Gerrard’s sending off

Following Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard’s stamp and subsequent sending off after just 48 seconds of coming off the bench against Manchester United, Coral writers find five other similar incidents when players see red.

Despite his age and experience, the occasion became too big for Gerrard in what was probably his last ever clash with the Red Devils and, after making a brilliant tackle moments before, he then stamped on Ander Herrera’s leg, in retaliation to a tough tackle from the Spaniard.

David Beckham flick-kicks Diego Simeone
The moment that saw England fans cursing in unison, when the Three Lions’ golden boy at the time Beckham got sent off for an off-the-ball kick out at now-Atletico Madrid manager Simeone, whose side are 5/1 to reach the Champions League final again this season, at the 1998 World Cup.

Beckham got sent off for his moment of madness following a foul, and once again England went home wondering what could have been.

Nigel de Jong karate-kicks Xabi Alonso
On the biggest stage of them all, you need to keep your cool and stay grounded, but Netherlands’ De Jong did anything but that in the 2010 World Cup final against Spain, as he kicked Alonso high in the chest.

Amazingly, referee Howard Webb didn’t send him off, but La Roja did still end up lifting the trophy.

Roy Keane revenge attack on Alf-Inge Haaland
Talk about holding a grudge, ferocious former United skipper Keane lashed out on Manchester City’s Haaland four years after the Norwegian tormented the Irishman, who injured his knee after fouling the then-Leeds United player.

Writing in his autobiography, Keane said on the second incident: “There are things I regret in my life and he’s not one of them.”

He also previously wrote: “I’d waited long enough. I f****** hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you c***. And don’t ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries.”

Haaland claimed that the foul ruined his career, even though he managed to play four days later.

Wayne Rooney stamp on Ricardo Carvalho
Another World Cup, another quarter-final and another disappointing exit for England. This time it was at the 2006 finals against Portugal in a penalty shoot-out, after Rooney got frustrated as he tussled for the ball.

However, frustration turned to anger, and the forward, who was just 20 at the time, stamped on defender Carvalho’s groin. Then-Man Utd teammate Cristiano Ronaldo made matters worse as he demanded that Rooney be sent off, before winking at his bench when the deed was done.

Luis Suarez chomps Giorgio Chiellini mid-match
It seems that World Cups bring out the worst in people, but none more than Uruguay superstar Suarez, who inexplicably decided to ‘gnash’ out on Italy defender Chiellini with his teeth, in what was his third televised biting incident.

His attack went unnoticed by the referee, and his side progressed to the knockout stages, but Suarez was banned for four months from all football.

One for luck… Mayor of London Boris Johnson stumbles and takes out former Manchester City and Germany attacker Maurizio Gaudino in a charity match.
