Liverpool shorten for top four again, but Man City now 6/1 title chances

Liverpool’s sensational 2-1 Anfield win over reigning Premier League champions Manchester City has had a huge impact on Coral’s betting for the title race and top four finish markets.

Brendan Rodgers’ boys have been cut twice over the weekend to get a Champions League place. Starting out at 15/8, they moved into 13/8 and then shortened again to 11/10.

Man City, meanwhile, have failed to capitalise on Chelsea winning the League Cup and that game in hand for Jose Mourinho’s men (against lowly Leicester City) is enough to tip the odds firmly against the Etihad outfit.

It’s now a 6/1 shot (from 10/3) that Manuel Pellegrini’s men retain the Premier League title. Chelsea have gone even more heavily odds-on at 1/8 (from 1/4) to bring the trophy to Stamford Bridge.

Elsewhere in the top four picture, dismal results abroad and at Wembley have impacted upon Tottenham’s chances. Mauricio Pochettino was 4/1 to steer Spurs back into Europe’s elite club competition, but their odds have lengthened to 11/2.

Southampton are the same price after losing back-to-back league games themselves. Arsenal and Manchester United, who will contest one of the FA Cup quarter-finals, remain odds-on for respective top four finishes.

Another disappointing defeat for Aston Villa sees them go odds-on for the drop at 5/6 (from 6/5). Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse sunk the West Midlands outfit on a St James’ Park away day where Tim Sherwood’s side had targeted getting something.

Thoughts now turn to who could be coming into next season’s Premier League. With the Championship title race as thrilling as it has been in years, Derby County are 2/1 favourites (from 7/4).

Steve McClaren’s men lost at Fulham, but so did closest challengers Middlesbrough, who are 7/2 (from 13/5) to be champions of the second-tier.

A sixth straight win for Norwich City sees their odds halved to 5/2. Alex Neil’s Canaries completed a league double over Ipswich Town (who have drifted to 33/1 from 20/1), while Bournemouth (7/1 from 6/1) drew a blank against Blackburn Rovers.

Watford’s dramatic win over Leeds United put them third, and they are 9/1 title chances (from 12/1).
