Everton’s turnaround in fortunes started in their second Premier League game of 2015, when they held champions Manchester City to a draw, and have since taken four points from their last two matches. Roberto Martinez is confident that this, plus their activity in the January transfer window, can stand them in good stead until the end of the season.

“We have now brought in Aaron Lennon who has got incredible experience and is at the peak of his powers as a player, at the age of 27,” Martinez said ahead of the Liverpool game.

“And we have got Arouna Kone fully fit and Romelu Lukaku is fully fit and in great condition. So I feel the squad is well balanced and strong everywhere.

“Now we are just trying to help Tony Hibbert, Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar to regain fitness and get back to where they can be pushing for a starting spot. That is a very strong squad for me from now until the end of the season.”

Liverpool, meanwhile, had a quiet winter window by comparison, with manager Brendan Rodgers sanctioning more outgoing loan deals if anything, though will have confidence in his team, which is undefeated in their last seven Premier League matches.

With the return from injury of star striker Daniel Sturridge, ask yourself, is this a match worth missing? It’s also a last chance to see Steven Gerrard take to the field on derby day!
