Which seven top-flight stars could vie for AFCON leading scorer?

| 17.01.2015

Excitement is building over the upcoming African Cup of Nations, Coral are offering fantastic odds for the competition top scorer.

With a slew of intriguing attackers set to be on show, it was tough work narrowing our list to just seven stars, but here’s who made our final cut.

Vincent Aboubakar
After scoring three in qualifying for Cameroon, Porto poacher Aboubakar, who has been one of Ligue 1’s most prolific forwards over the past few seasons, faces the daunting task of stepping into the shoes of Indomitable Lions legend Samuel Eto’o.

The 22-year-old has more than enough talent, however, and is 10/1 to take his chance and win the race to be number one striker.

Wilfried Bony
Brilliant Bony is certainly man of the moment as the Ivory Coast attacker prepares to take over the mantle of leading man from Didier Drogba and awaits his mooted move to Manchester City.

Sensational value at 6/1, the physical frontman is favourite to be top marksman in Equatorial Guinea and has notched up 35 goals in 70 games for Swansea City.

Ex-Arsenal attacker Gervinho has found a new lease of life with Italian giants Roma and his nation have already reaped the rewards of this new-found confidence.

The 27-year-old scored twice at the World Cup in Ivory Coast colours and will now bring his bag of tricks to the African Cup of Nations where he is 8/1 to be the most prolific forward.

Asamoah Gyan
With 45 goals in 86 caps, the former Sunderland striker is joint second-favourite at a super 7/1 to bag the biggest goal haul at AFCON.

Ghana skipper and all-time top scorer Gyan leads from the front and has a support from rampant wingers Andre Ayew and Christian Atsu.

Islam Slimani
At 7/1, Sporting Lisbon star Slimani is great value, after dazzling for Algeria at the World Cup. The tricky 26-year-old has nine goals in just 20 games so far this season and will be aiming to make an impact for his nation once again.

Yaya Toure
City’s powerful and imperious midfield man should be essential for the Ivory Coast following Drogba’s omission. With a stinging shot and perfect timing, CAF Player of the Year 2015 Toure’s eye for goal has resulted in nine goals this season already, making him 16/1 to be crowned top scorer.

Papiss Cisse
Super Cisse (an interesting if outside punt at 25/1) will leave rumours of a switch from Newcastle United to Swansea behind as he spearheads Senegal’s fearsome attack at the AFCON.

The strong centre forward has often made the difference for the Magpies this season and will be looking to add to his tally of 17 goals in 34 caps.
