Punters collect millions on blackest day for bookies

| 19.01.2015

Britain’s bookmakers have suffered their heaviest losses ever on football this weekend according to Coral after a perfect storm of punter-friendly results cost the sector in excess of forty million pounds. Today punters across the country collected their winnings, in what has been described by Coral as “the blackest weekend for bookies”.

The biggest winner was a 54-year-old builder from Plymouth, who netted a whopping £70,667, after placing a £5 bet on a football accumulator in his local Coral shop. The father of three backed fourteen teams to win, including Manchester United, Liverpool, West Ham and Shrewsbury.

When all fourteen teams won, the Plymouth punter couldn’t believe his luck, exclaiming, “I have a wife and three children, and this money will go a long way for us. The plan now is to buy a house, which is a dream come true!”

In Kent, it was also a weekend of celebration for punters. A 58-year-old construction worker from Rochester scooped £30,454 after placing a £1 bet on a football accumulator, while another builder from the same area won £55,563 after he placed £200 bet. Elsewhere, a 60-year old retired builder from Ashford was rejoicing his £30,000 windfall, while in Richmond, another builder was left speechless when he landed £4,792 from a £5 bet.

“It was a weekend of absolute carnage for bookmakers, with the builders of Britain doing the most damage. Thousands of punters across the country have turned just a few quid into life-changing amounts of money, and it looks as if builders are the luckiest punters in Britain,” said Coral’s Spokeswoman, Nicola McGeady.
