Which Premier League predators could sink or surpass 30 goals?
As Coral offer excellent enhanced odds of 4/1 for any player to score 30 or more Premier League goals during 2015, we cast our eyes back to previous magic marksmen to have reached that milestone and who could achieve it this year.
The striking superstars to have hit 30 or over in a calendar year (in the PL era) include the likes of Thierry Henry, Robin van Persie and Alan Shearer.
There is a clear divide in that brilliant bunch, between high-calibre players such as Henry, who were blessed with incredible skill and technique, and Shearer, a great goal scorer, able to sniff out half chances.
Here’s who we think could join that potent hall of fame.
Sergio Aguero
Aguero has been nothing short of incredible this season, surpassing compatriot Carlos Tevez to become Manchester City’s most prolific Premier League scorer.
With 14 goals in 15 outings before the New Year in this campaign, plus four in the latter half of last season, the excellent Argentina international was over halfway there in 2014.
A Sky Blues striking superstar, Aguero certainly ranks among special talents like Henry, and possesses all the attributes to exceed Shearer’s record.
Tenacious, tricky, intelligent and able to change a game in an instant, Aguero is also available at 7/4 with Coral to finish the season as Premier League top scorer.
Diego Costa
As Chelsea continue to trample all before them, courageous Costa, odds-on favourite at 4/5 to be top league marksman in 2014/15, keeps racking up the goals.
The 26-year-old has been on target 13 times in his debut season at Stamford Bridge and could easily find himself joining the 30 plus club in the calendar year of 2015.
Strong, determined and lethal in the opposition’s area, Brazil-born Costa is the epitome of a Jose Mourinho-preferred centre forward, and is working under the perfect boss to hone his skills.
Having hit the ground running, the formidable frontman can improve upon his efforts last season in La Liga, when he found the net for Atletico Madrid on 27 occasions.
Charlie Austin
QPR’s goal hero may not find himself on Real Madrid’s shopping list, or be considered amongst the world’s best, but the 25-year-old sharpshooter could still break plenty of scoring records.
Just like Shearer, Austin’s skillset is based on fine finishing, perfect positioning and tremendous timing. The former bricklayer has an uncanny ability to appear in the right place and continues to grab vital points for his club.
With 12 top tier strikes in 2014, the unlikely lad is bearing down on Aguero and Costa in the goal charts, and will need to net more to save the Hoops’ Premier League status.
Robin van Persie
The only player on this list to have reached the 30 mark in a calendar year before, with former club Arsenal in 2011, the flying Dutchman is now aiming to hit the same heights for Manchester United.
Van Persie still has plenty left in the tank, having racked up goals despite being yet to hit top form and, as he continues to accrue game time, rivals could find the Clockwork Orange captain catching up.
The 31-year-old is a joy to watch, with a tremendous first touch, a sensational left peg, expertly timed runs and an array of fine finishes up his sleeve.
It is certainly not beyond Van Persie’s capabilities to enjoy a potent purple patch and fill his boots once more.
