Coral’s PL team of matchweek 22: Magical Oscar and Cazorla
Published:
Coral writers pick our team of matchweek 22, that saw seven away wins from nine fixtures. Goals galore and deadly defensive displays dominate this starting XI.
David de Gea – Goalkeeper (Manchester United)
The superstar Spaniard may still be heavily linked with Real Madrid, but the transfer talk has clearly not distracted him with the stopper saving brilliantly twice from in-form Charlie Austin to help United to a tricky 2-0 win.
Branislav Ivanovic – Right back (Chelsea)
Serbian rock Ivanovic helped the Blues restrict Swansea City, with their hosts getting no shots on target, as his side ran out 5-0 victors. He also found out Andre Schurrle, who slotted in the fifth goal, using decent trickery.
Martin Skrtel – Centre back (Liverpool)
A second clean sheet on the trot for Liverpool (5/1 top four chances) in the Premier League, both on the road, and Slovak Skrtel was once again impressive. The Reds’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa now puts them five points off the Champions league places.
Philipp Wollscheid – Centre back (Stoke City)
After a woeful debut last time out against Arsenal, the tall Germany international put in a far more assured display to help down Leicester City away from home.
Nacho Monreal – Left back (Arsenal)
A 2-0 win on the road to the defending Premier League champions is always a confidence booster, and how Arsenal needed it against Manchester City. Spainish left back Monreal played a crucial part in this excellent result.
Alex Song – Defensive midfield (West Ham United)
Barcelona-owned Song was simply unplayable against Hull City, particularly in the second half. He was equally as useful in attack as defence, setting Stewart Downing away for the third goal after a battering ram-esque run. Song was also involved in the second and helped the Hammers (6/1 top six chances) to a clean sheet.
Dwight Gayle – Right wing (Crystal Palace)
Alan Pardew’s Palace are becoming comeback specialists, and Gayle’s two goals and assist in his club’s 3-2 victory over Burnley make him deserving of his place in this team of the week.
Oscar – Attacking midfield (Chelsea)
Chelsea’s Brazilian magician also finished his game with those same stats, scoring twice and setting up another. Oscar was key to the Blues’ rout of the Swans.
Santi Cazorla – Attacking midfield (Arsenal)
Cazorla was the man who unlocked title-chasing Man City (9/2 second-favourites), grabbing a goal from the penalty spot and an assist. The Spaniard was absolutely everywhere on the pitch.
Eljero Elia – Left wing (Southampton)
It seems Ronald Koeman can do nothing wrong, and his latest move to bring in compatriot Elia on loan from Werder Bremen won the game for Southampton against Newcastle United. The Dutch winger scored twice at St James’ Park in a 2-1 victory.
Diego Costa – Striker (Chelsea)
Like Gayle and teammate Oscar, Brazilian-born Spain international Costa got two goals, capitalising on defensive errors, and an assist at the weekend. The prolific frontman is now three strikes clear at the top of the Premier League scoring charts for this season.
