Coral’s Premier League soon to be out of contract all-English XI
This summer could see a sensational scramble for a clutch of Premier League players that are now entering the final few months of their current contracts.
If none are snapped up this January, expect transfer tussles galore, with potential England internationals at the forefront of the fray.
Read on to see which soon-to-be free agents made the final cut for what would be a surprisingly tasty Three Lions starting XI.
Formation: 4-4-2 diamond
Goalkeeper: Steve Harper
Current Hull City custodian Harper may not be the most spectacular stopper, but has always been a reliable presence between the posts. At 39, he may have to accept a step down to the Championship, however.
Right back: Glen Johnson
Johnson, known more for his rapid runs and probing crosses down the right flank than defensive stability, looks set to depart Anfield. Potentially an option for West Ham United, the 30-year-old would be a bargain pick on the free market.
Centre back: Micah Richards
Strong and fleet-footed, Richards still has plenty of potential despite his career stalling at Manchester City. Premier League giants Chelsea could be contenders for his services, but perhaps the adaptable defender, currently on-loan at Fiorentina, should set his sights a little lower to ensure regular game time.
Centre back: Wes Brown
With John Terry set to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge, former Manchester United star Brown steals in to our all-English XI. Some sturdy performances for Sunderland this season have shown he is still an asset, but the veteran’s injury-prone nature may put suitors off.
Left back: Paul Konchesky
With Leicester City looking likely chances for relegation, and 12/5 to finish bottom, Konchesky could take the opportunity to move on. Despite his penchant for going into challenges at full-throttle, the Englishman’s experience could come in handy for newly promoted clubs.
Defensive midfield: Michael Carrick
If Manchester United, 16/1 to win the Premier League, let midfield conductor Carrick slip through their fingers, it could be a big mistake. A gaggle of teams would be expected to take a punt on the excellent anchorman, who is still one of the Red Devils’ most accomplished players and best passer of the ball.
Right midfield: Joey Barton
Controversial Barton appears to have been making the most of his second chance with QPR, but could seek pastures new this summer. At his best an influential figure in the middle of the park with an eye for an assist, the 32-year-old may still be worth the risk for a freshly promoted team.
Left midfield: Fabian Delph
Much sought after Delph has been tipped to replace Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. The Aston Villa man makes our team ahead of clubmate Tom Cleverly for his tenacious tackling and, after beginning his career in a more attacking role, has all the tools to become a brilliant box-to-box midfielder.
Attacking midfield: James Milner
Milner has often been Manchester City’s forgotten man and it seems the Sky Blues will only truly value the 29-year-old once he departs.
Intelligent and versatile, as well as able to chip in with goals and set pieces, the underrated Leeds United academy product keeps play ticking over with his vital interceptions and ability to pick simple passes.
Striker: Danny Ings
The future looks bright for Burnley poacher and England Under-21 international Ings, with the likes of Ajax and Newcastle United mooted as possible destinations for the talented attacker.
Currently embroiled in a relegation battle with the Clarets, Ings’ undeniable nose for goal should see him become an asset for one of his many suitors.
Striker: Peter Crouch
Stoke City’s 6ft 7in centre forward is yet to agree a new deal but has shown, at age 33, he still has what it takes to the lead the line for a top tier club.
In-form frontman Crouch will surely be in demand this summer, after the former Liverpool striker caused havoc against Arsenal and Manchester United, grabbing vital goals and assists.
