Borussia Dortmund, 28/1 Champions League chances with Coral, have moved decisively to stop their Bundesliga side by buying highly-rated Red Bull Salzburg and Slovenia creative midfielder Kevin Kampl.

The 24-year-old, who featured for the Austrian outfit twice against Celtic in the Europa League group stage this term and on international duty at Wembley in a Euro 2016 qualifier in England’s group in November, will officially move to the Westfalenstadion on January 1st.

Dortmund koss Jurgen Klopp has captured Kampl for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £10.5m, where he has committed to a four-and-a-half-year contract.

“Kevin Kampl is a versatile attacking-midfielder, who we have been observing for some time,” said Borussia sporting director Michael Zorc. “His style of play fits in perfectly with our own.”

Born in the German town of Solingen, 40 miles outside Dortmund, to Slovenian parents, Kampl began his senior career at Bayer Leverkusen, now coached by his old Salzburg boss Roger Schmidt, but failed to make the grade. He turned out just once for them, as a second-half substitute in a knockout Europa League tie against Ukrainian outfit Metalist Kharkiv.

It was with the Red Bull-owned Austrian outfit that Kampl rose to prominence, scoring 14 times in 51 matches across all competitions for Salzburg last season.

Capable of playing down either flank, off the front or in midfield, right-footer Kampl netted four goals and laid on as many assists in the Europa League group stage this term. He is eligible to play Dortmund’s Champions League campaign, which resumes in February with a last 16 tie against Serie A leaders Juventus.

Dortmund sit second-bottom of the Bundesliga at the winter break, and have struggled because of an injury crisis. Many of their star performers, including left back Marcel Schmelzer, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and forward Marco Reus, missed Germany’s World Cup triumph in Brazil.

Long-term injury absentee Gundogan has returned to first-team action, however, alongside Poland winger Jakub Blaszczykowski, but Reus remains sidelined.

Dortmund’s bitter rivals Bayern Munich have bought or poached key players from their in recent seasons, with Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski jumping ship to the Allianz Arena.
