Kirby Calls It: All Weather champion previews upcoming rides

| 20.12.2014

Fresh from rides at Kempton and Lingfield this week, our All-Weather Champion columnist, Adam Kirby shares his thoughts on his upcoming rides. Adam is in action at Lingfield and below he talks us through his 4 rides.

12:55 Lingfield

I have four rides at Lingfield on Saturday. I ride Acclamate for Marco Botti in this one. He came racing with a very big reputation and started favourite first time out but that run showed he was a slow learner. Second time out he was third in what looked a nice maiden, it didn’t look a bad race and he beaten by two okay horses. Obviously he’s going to need to improve again to win a novice. It looks an open race, there’s a few nice newcomers so he’s going to have to raise his game a small bit but I’ll be disappointed if he’s not in the shake-up.

I’m aboard Castilo Del Diablo for David Simcock here. He’s a lovely horse, he’s uncomplicated. He travels around mid-division and you ride him to pick up in the straight. He’s got okay sort of form. He was fourth in the Marathon Championships at Lingfield on Good Friday last April and ran well on his comeback run a few weeks ago. I wouldn’t say he’ll definitely win, it’s very competitive, but he’s in with a good chance. Anglophile is the danger and the one to beat. He’s not a bad little horse. We were unlucky to get beat at Kempton two starts back. He produced a really good effort when winning a big handicap at Kempton the last day under Shane Gray. He gave him a good ride and deserved to keep the ride. It’s a nice little race and my horse has a chance.

I ride another one for Marco Botti in this one, Grendisar; he’s a very good horse that needs riding to perfection. I get on well with him and if he gets the conditions of the race he’ll be thereabouts. He ran well last time; I think Anglophile beat him that day. He’s a hold up horse, needs to come late, and doesn’t want to be in front any time sooner than a half a furlong out. But if he gets the run of the race, he’ll be hard to beat. He’s a good horse.

3:10 Lingfield

My last ride of the day is Cardinal for Robert Cowell. He’s consistent and seems to run his race but I think he’ll need to improve to win. He’s nine now but ran second on his last start behind Johnny Splash at Lingfield earlier this month. Robert’s horses are in good form so there’s hope that he’ll run a good race.
