Frank Lampard loan extension gives Manchester City New Year boost

| 26.12.2014

Frank Lampard is set to give Manchester City (9/4 with Coral to win the title) a huge boost in their hunt of retaining the Premier League trophy with the midfielder reportedly expected to extend his current loan spell beyond the New Year.

The former Chelsea midfielder is on-loan from the MLS but is set to delay his arrival at New York City FC by agreeing an extension on the loan deal until mid-February.

Lampard’s possible new contract will be warmly welcomed by City coach, Manuel Pellegrini, as his team aims to retain the Premier League trophy. Pellegrini’s high-flying side currently sit behind only league leaders Chelsea in the table, after narrowing the gap at the top in recent weeks with wins over Leicester City and Crystal Palace.

Champions City have benefited immensely from the former England international’s goals and top performances this campaign, proving to be one of the bargains of the summer, after sealing a controversial switch from Jose Mourinho’s Blues.

The menacing midfielder has struck six times in 15 outings for City, including a recent winning goal in his side’s narrow 1-0 victory over relegation strugglers, Leicester.

Lampard has proved his worth this term, showing Mourinho what he is missing out on, after reportedly refusing to keep the three-time Premier League winner on the books in London. City’s new goalscoring hero also netted against his former club at the beginning of the season, in a closely contested 1-1 draw, his late strike earning a vital point for Pellegrini’s men in title race.

A decision to remain in England beyond the New Year will anger the MLS franchise which Lampard currently belongs to. However, with the Premier League legend showing the determination and commitment which made him a star at Chelsea, its possible Lampard will stay in Manchester to help drive City’s championship push.
