Barcelona and Spain star Sergio Busq-ing for Premier League move?

| 22.12.2014

Barcelona, 11/2 with Coral to win the Champions League, may have to brace themselves for a barrage of offers for midfield maestro Sergio Busquets, according to reports.

Rumours of discontent at the Nou Camp persist under the stewardship of Luis Enrique, as Barca chase Real Madrid’s coat-tails in La Liga.

Now Spain international Busquets has been linked with a departure from his boyhood side, and a host of top teams are supposedly willing to tempt Enrique and the Barcelona board into a summer sale.

Having spent his entire career with the Catalan club, after rising through the famed La Masia ranks to become a lynchpin of Pep Guardiola’s multiple Champions League-winning side, it is understandable that the accomplished anchorman may seek pastures new.

Premier League trio Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are all said to be circling for the World Cup winner, but could face competition from Ligue 1 rich kids PSG and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, where Busquets’ former mentor Guardiola is now stationed.

At first look, the Gunners and Red Devils are certainly the two teams most in need of the 26-year-old’s services.

Arsene Wenger’s side have long lacked grit and tenacity in the middle of the park, with question marks constantly hovering over the north London club’s seeming lack of winning mentality.

Bold Busquets would fit into the Arsenal’s philosophy with ease, as his unique skill-set allows him to to provide both silk and steel. Arsenal will soon need a replacement for the ageing Mikel Arteta, and who better than his compatriot to take over the mantle and dictate from deep?

The crafty Spaniard would also be an upgrade to Louis van Gaal’s current options at Old Trafford, with majestic Michael Carrick also approaching the twilight of his career. The Englishman could certainly use a more dynamic partner alongside him, who is able to do the leg work.

A revitalised Marouane Fellaini has been entrusted with that role of late, successfully disrupting the rhythm of opposition temas. However, Busquets’ composure, vision and ability to instigate attacks would make him a far superior foil that could change the Red Devils into true title contenders.

Chelsea, Bayern and PSG are all well stocked with world class midfielders, although a summer switch to a club likely to be challenging to win, not just compete in, the Champions League, would understandably be more appealing to the decorated star.

With former clubmate Cesc Fabregas having settled in sensationally at Stamford Bridge, and ex-boss Guardiola bringing top Spanish talents such as Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara to the Allianz Arena, Busquets would have an array of options open if he decided to move.

Barca academy product Busquets’ potential transfer could signify a changing of the guard, with Xavi Hernandez also appearing to be edging closer to retirement. The Spaniard’s sale could certainly help generate funds to build a fresh team to challenge rivals Real, who are 11/4 to lift the Champions League.
