Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic (9/1 to get relegated) have sacked boss Uwe Rosler, following a run of bad results.

The Lancashire outfit announced on their official website: “The club can confirm that it has parted company with manager Uwe Rosler, with immediate effect.”

Wigan have slipped into the bottom three of the table, after managing just one win in their last 12 games. Assistant manager Graham Barrow has been named as temporary boss (with Eric Black, who has been linked with the permanent position, in support) for their next game against Middlesbrough at home, where they are 17/10 chances to win.

Other names who are potential candidates for the job include Malky Mackay, Chris Hughton and Brian McDermott.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan confirmed: “I have thought long and hard about this. I have thought about little else for days in fact. Initially my thoughts were that Uwe should be given more time.

“He is a good manager and I like him immensely as a person, he is honest, passionate and clearly works day and night to try and earn success for the team.

“Following the incredible achievements of last season, I felt it was the right thing to do that he should be given more time. However, the situation we find ourselves in at the moment, and the run of results in recent months, really has been alarming. Something is clearly not working.

“For whatever reason, the team is not gelling, despite substantial financial backing in the summer and the dressing room being blessed with a huge amount of quality.

“Therefore, I have now come to the reluctant conclusion that for the long term good of the club, we need a change,” he continued.

“Uwe is a good man and a good manager and he will bounce back, I am sure of that. We thank him for his efforts with us, I could not have wished to appoint a more committed and hard-working manager and we sincerely wish him all the best in his future career. But now the search begins immediately for a replacement.”

Just the day before, though, Whelan gave Rosler the dreaded vote of confidence, saying: “There is nothing wrong with the manager. A good manager doesn’t become a bad manager overnight, and Uwe Rosler is a good manager.”

Before adding: “I spoke with Uwe on Friday and I told him I was 100 per cent behind him. He needs support from everyone, and he will get it.”

German Rosler, who was a former player for Manchester City, took over the club from Owen Coyle last December, and led the team to the play-off semis at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

But, with the Latics claiming just 16 points from their first 17 games this season, Whelan decided to bring an end to Rosler’s spell. Wigan are now 11/1 chances for another top six finish this term.
