International Australian batsman Phil Hughes has suffered is reportedly in critical condition, following a sickening blow to the head from a bouncer whilst playing for South Australia.

The 25-year-old, who has played in 26 Tests, 25 ODIs and one T20I for his nation, has been taken to hospital, after needing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and treatment on the edge of the pitch for around 40 minutes.

A helicopter was called, but Hughes eventually went to hospital in an ambulance, accompanied by a doctor. He has since had surgery, and is in intensive care.

A Spokesman for St. Vincent’s hospital said: “He arrived in a critical condition and remains in a critical condition.

“When he arrived he underwent a set of scans to establish the extent of his injuries and then a decision was made to perform surgery. All I could confirm is that he did sustain a head injury and that he is in a critical condition at the moment.”

Tim Nielsen, who is South Australia’s high performance boss, added: “As you’re aware, Phil Hughes was injured today and he’s undergoing surgery.

“The outcome of that surgery is unlikely to be known for 24-48 hours, we ask you to respect the privacy of his family and friends.”

This unfortunate incident occurred during a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales, which was abandoned, with rising star Sean Abbott’s bouncer hitting the side of Hughes’ head. The batsman looked shaken for a few seconds, before going to ground where he was seemingly unconscious.

Past and present players around the world of cricket have shown their support for Hughes on social media…

Australia head coach Darren Lehmann, who was said to be considering giving Hughes a recall to the senior side for the first Test against India after fitness doubts over captain Michael Clarke, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Phil and his family. He is a great fighter and a great young man.”

Retired legendary spinner Shane Warne added: “Just heard the news about Phil Hughes, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Hang in there buddy, we are all fighting with u!!!”

Former fast bowler and great Glenn McGrath said: “Our thoughts are with Phillip Hughes and his family. Wishing him a quick and full recovery.”

There were some kind words from English stars as well, with ex-England skipper Michael Vaughan saying: “Just woke to the devastating news about Phil Hughes… Thoughts are with his family…”

Current England bowlers sent their wishes too, with Stuart Broad saying: “Awful news about Phil Hughes. Fight hard, everyone’s thoughts are with you and your family,” and James Anderson adding: “Awful news about Phil Hughes. Sickening to hear. Praying for him and his family.”

Hughes once had a world record to his name, sharing a 10th-wicket partnership, in a Test against England in 2013, of 163 with debutant Ashton Agar.

Coral wish all the best for Hughes at this moment, and hope for a speedy recovery!
