Capital One Cup holders Man City face easy fourth round Magpies tie

Manchester City, who are the Capital One Cup holders and 3/1 tournament second-favourites this season, face a home tie in the fourth round against a team they simply love to play, Newcastle United.

The last five meetings between the two sides in all competitions have ended with the Sky Blues beating them to nil, and they are odds-on at 1/3 for victory in 90 minutes again, and 5/4 to do so without conceding.

More enticing odds of 13/2 say that City can win 2-0 in normal time, as have has been the scoreline in their favour in their previous three head-to-heads with Newcastle, one of which was at this stage of the cup last term.

If Newcastle, who are 9/2 to qualify, are to somehow shock City, they will need to take confidence in their recent form in the Premier League, rather than looking at their record of 11 consecutive losses against them.

The Magpies do go into this game on the back of three games without defeat, though, after a difficult start to the season, and won their last two, against Leicester City and then away to Tottenham. Man City, meanwhile, suffered a surprise loss to West Ham United last time out.

Alan Pardew’s men (28/1 tournament chances) have very tempting odds of 17/2 for victory again in 90 minutes, and for their first defeat of Man City on the road since 2000, which was in the top-flight.

For goals, there are plenty of names to choose from in Manuel Pellegrini’s side, as Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, David Silva and Yaya Toure have all netted against Newcastle before. They are 1/2, 8/11, 5/4 and 7/4 respectively in the anytime market.

Argentine attacker Aguero has been in particularly good form this season, having scored 11 times in 12 games so far, and he is a more enticing 7/4 to bag a brace or better, or 9/4 to net first.

Samir Nasri, meanwhile, could make a return for the first time in seven games, after recovering from a groin injury. The Frenchman is 6/1 to strike last.

No current Magpies player has scored in this fixture before, but back young Spaniard Ayoze Perez, who broke his scoring duck by getting the winner against Spurs, to get a goal anytime at 7/2.

Man City and Newcastle take part in their second and third Capital One Cup match respectively this season, with the latter seeing off Gillingham and Crystal Palace away, while the former thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 7-0 at home.

Frank Lampard is still out of contention, while recent Argentina call-up keeper Willy Caballero looks set to replace Joe Hart. For the visitors, they will be without Papiss Cisse, Emmanuel Riviere, Mike Williamson, Cheick Tiote, Siem de Jong and Davide Santon.
