Arsenal eyeing January raid on PSG for left back Lucas Digne

| 30.10.2014

Arsenal (outsiders at 25/1 with Coral to win the Premier League) are believed to be sniffing around PSG defender Lucas Digne, with a January transfer potentially in the works.

The Gunners’ rearguard woes have been no secret this season, with Arsene Wenger’s wobbly backline leaking 11 Premier League goals in nine games so far this term, just three less than they have netted.

With the winter window merely months away from opening, Wenger is rumoured to be ramping up his interest in defensive targets, and compatriot and left back Digne apparently top of his hitlist.

The north Londoners already have Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal to play in Digne’s position, but the latter has recently been used to cover the gaps at centre back as injuries have forced Wenger to reshuffle his pack several times.

Highly-rated Digne, still just 21, has been finding it difficult to establish himself in Paris, after reportedly rebuffing interest from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United to move to the Ligue 1 giants back in 2013.

The six-capped France full back broke through Lille’s academy to make his first senior team appearance in 2011, and went on to play over 60 times for the Nord-pas de Calais club, attracting the attention of some of Europe’s biggest teams.

After seeing his opportunities at the Parc des Princes limited recently, Digne could be persuaded to leave his domestic league in an attempt to cement a starting spot in Didier Deschamp’s starting XI, ahead of former Red Devil Patrice Evra and Manchester City star Gael Clichy.

Arsenal are not the only side still interested in securing Digne’s services, despite his recent struggles, with Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Roma all supposedly preparing to swoop for the young talent.

PSG would likely charge a high price for Digne, however, in light of financial fair play sanctions and their need to ensure they meet the quota for homegrown players.

Wenger will be keen to wrap up the mooted move whilst flying Brazilian full back Maxwell is keeping his transfer target out of the starting XI. Potential talks with the Paris-based club could also be an ideal opportunity for the Gunners boss to seal a deal for much sought-after PSG academy product Adrien Rabiot.

Serie A side Roma are now believed to be leading the race for midfield sensation Rabiot, whose contract in Paris expires at the end of this season, but Wenger could use any transfer for Digne to push Arsenal (7/2 to win a major trophy) back to the front of the queue for his long-term target.
