Whooper swans traditionally spend their summers in Iceland, before flying south to spend their winters in the marginally lower climes of England.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is starting to establish himself as the ‘whooper’ at Swansea City this term, one that has yielded cries of exaltation from the south Wales club’s crowds. In three Premier League appearances, he has scored once, and contributed three brilliant assists, form that looks set to continue, after a great performance for Iceland on international duty.

Swansea are 8/1 with Coral to secure a top six finish this term, and under boss Garry Monk, whose job was widely tipped to be in danger this term, they look an impressive outfit.

“He is a class act on the pitch — and he is a class person to go with it,” said the Swansea manager. “That is what we have concentrated on — adding quality and that personality into the group that will be good for the group. We want people who will put the team first, and Gylfi is that type.”

Despite not scoring perhaps as many as he would have liked to so far this season, Monk still maintains that Sigurdsson, who swapped Spurs with left back Ben Davies for a return to the Liberty Stadium, is a vital component to his team.

“It does not matter if you score. It is how you contribute — that is what I try to push home every single day,” mONK added. “If the team do well, the individuals within it will do well.

“Gylfi has contributed right from the start of the season. That is the quality he has and that is why I wanted him here right from the off.

“We brought him in because we knew him so well. Hopefully the form he has shown continues and he gets better through the season.”

For the ‘Whooper Swan’ though, his next priority is adding a couple of whoppers to his scoring account, starting away at Chelsea next, a match Monks men are 9/1 with Coral to win.
