Brighton Preview: Miss Brazil a beauty in sprint opener

Trainer Richard Hannon has a tremendous strike rate with his runners at Brighton, and Miss Brazil can provide him with another winner in the 6f handicap that opens today’s card (2.30).

Hannon has won with 36% of his runners at the venue in the past 12 months, and in Miss Brazil has an in-form filly who posted a cracking effort when runner-up last time out.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel chased home Inciting Incident in a five-runner contest at Epsom, and the winner has franked the form by going on to land a stronger contest at Goodwood.

It looks strong form in the context of this race, and the handicapper has given Miss Brazil a real chance by leaving her mark unchanged.

He could easily have put the three-year-old up several pounds given the subsequent exploits of the winner, and that makes Miss Brazil look weighted to take all the beating in the hands of champion jockey Richard Hughes.

Footstepsintherain bounced back to form last time out and can take advantage of a fall in the weights to land the 7f handicap (3.30).

The gelding has two wins to his name, and the last of those in a class 4 handicap at Kempton off a mark of 79 when trained by David Lanigan.

Now in the care of David Dennis, Foostepsintherain is running off just 72 and signalled that his time was near when staying on late to finish a two length fourth of nine to Al Khan at Leicester last week.

That was a class 4 contest, and the four-year-old now drops down into class 5 company off an unchanged mark.

It gives Footstepsintherain a massive chance from a handicapping perspective, and this looks a golden opportunity for the son of Footstepsinthesand to get back in the winners’ enclosure.

In the 1m handicap (5.00), Cueca could be a bit of each-way value if the fitting of blinkers for the first time have the desired effect.

The Jonathan Portman trained filly hinted at ability in three runs last season, most notably when fifth of 11 to Cape Wrath in a Newbury maiden that has thrown-up several subsequent winners.

The daughter of Country Reel also didn’t shape too badly on handicap debut when keeping on to finish a never nearer fourth of 12 to Syrian Pearl at Lingfield back in April, and although
Cueca hasn’t built on that effort on four subsequent starts her mark has fallen by 7lb as a result and she should be up to making an impact at this level off a rating of just 49.

3.30: Footstepsintherain (NB)
