Transfer roundup: Di Maria, Navas, Medel and ‘psycho’ all feature
With just under a month now until the transfer window closes in most European leagues, deals and rumours are predictably flying everywhere.
Recently, the likes of Gary Medel and Angel Di Maria are said to be closing on moves to Inter Milan and PSG respectively, while Costa Rica keeper hero Keylor Navas is a confirmed Real Madrid player. In other news, Nottingham Forest boss Stuart Pearce expresses his anger over the sale of two of his players.
Cardiff City (a market price best of 8/1 to be Championship winners) midfield destroyer Medel is looking very close to sealing a move to sign for the Milan giants, after arriving in Italy. The Chile international is said to be about to finalise a deal, and has already set his sights on succeeding a club legend.
“I’m happy to be here. I’m ready to be Cambiasso’s heir,” he confidently said.
Argentine Di Maria, meanwhile, has reportedly told his agent Jorge Mendes to complete a deal with PSG, all but ending speculation linking the attacking star with a move to Manchester United. The player has apparently agreed a £130k-a-week contract with the French capital side.
Mendes was pictured eating a meal with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and general manager Jose Angel Sanchez.
World Cup star and Costa Rica keeper Navas is now a confirmed player at the Bernebeu, signing a six-year deal. The 27-year-old will now challenge for the number one jersey with Diego Lopez and legend Iker Casillas, despite the duo being linked with moves away.
Navas made the most amount of saves than any other stopper in Europe’s top five leagues last term, with 141, and signs for a deal worth a reported £7.9m from Levante.
Closer to home, Forest boss Pearce, whose side are 6/1 for promotion, has stated his unhappiness at a deal to sell two of his players, Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow, to Newcastle for £5m being done behind his back. The duo will be loaned back to the Championship side for the coming season, though.
“We had an offer from Newcastle that I was made aware of last week,” Pearce, affectionately known as psycho, said. “The figures that were mentioned, I said I would not do that deal when I was asked the question.
“I thought I could push their value up and that would be worth more in the long run. The first thing I heard today about things was when Jamaal Lascelles came in and told me that he had a medical at Newcastle at 2pm. That disappointed me greatly.”
In other news, Marouane Fellaini’s potential move to Napoli is still on the cards, but manager Rafa Benitez admits the deal is out of his hands, saying: “He’s not one of our players, his future does not depend on us, but on Manchester United.”
Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has seemingly dismissed links that his former side Barcleona looking to sign defender Jermoe Boateng. He said: “I don’t usually say anything about things I read in the newspaper, but I am planning 100 per cent with him here.”
Confirmed signings to the Premier league and West Brom, though, are defenders Australian Jason Davidson from Dutch side Heracles and Costa Rica’s Cristian Gamboa from Rosenborg.
