Swansea City set to make Sigurdsson splash in transfer market
Swansea City, 11/4 for a top ten finish this season, are reportedly keen on signing Iceland star Gylfi Sigurdsson from Spurs, after the midfielder enjoyed a successful loan stint with the Welsh club in 2012.
Any deal could involve a swap with one or more of Swansea’s stars, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to add fresh faces to White Hart Lane, with the former Southampton coach credited with an interest in left back Ben Davies and Dutch stopper Michel Vorm.
Sigurdson was prolific in his season with the Swans, netting 7 times in 18 league appearances, before opting to sign for Spurs, where has endured two somewhat less successful years, only scoring 13 goals in 85 outings in all competitions.
The Welsh side will be hoping that the former Reading man can recapture his previous form, as Swansea brace themselves for change, with a spate of departures and new additions expected.
Garry Monk has already welcomed ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and former Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis to the Liberty Stadium, with the duo arriving on free transfers.
Swansea have also signed England Under-19’s starlet Raheem Hanley from Blackburn for an undisclosed fee, with the left back a potential long-term successor to in-demand Davies.
Still looking to make further additions, the Swans are rumoured to be close to making a bid for Bosnia and Herzegovina World Cup star Muhamed Besic, who is reportedly valued around £3.5m by current club Ferencvaros.
Able to play in both centre back and defensive midfield positions, versatile 21-year-old Besic impressed for Bosnia in Brazil against opponents of the ilk of Lionel Messi, and earned rave reviews in his homeland.
This follows the news that much sought-after skipper Ashley Williams has signed a new deal that will keep him at the Liberty Stadium until 2018, with Swansea cementing their defensive options ahead of next season.
Swans boss Monk is also seeking to add another World Cup star to his squad, with Ecuador attacking midfielder Jefferson Montero apparently top of his hit-list. The skilful winger is currently plying his trade in Mexico, but could soon join Swansea in a deal reported to be worth £4m.
News of these potential additions arrives as Pablo Hernandez, Jose Canas, Alejandro Pozuelo and key player Michu were left behind, as the rest of the squad jetted off for their pre-season tour in the Untied States. Michu, who scored 20 league goals in two seasons for the club, looks likely to make a move to Serie A side Napoli, leaving a gap in the squad for a new attacking option.
With Monk also ready to fend off interest from Premier League giants Liverpool in star striker Wilfried Bony, Swansea, who are 5/1 to be relegated this season, it would be wise to lure new players before they suffer a Southampton-esque clear-out.
