Liverpool eye up Swansea City starlet Ben Davies

Liverpool, 10/1 to win the Premier League, are reportedly targeting a move for Swansea City left back Ben Davies. It is understood the Reds will have to shell out £10 million for the 21-year-old, while Tottenham are also said to be interested in the young defender.

The Welshman, whose contract with the Swans runs until 2017, has already made 70 appearances in the top tier, and will be hoping to secure a switch to a bigger club this summer. Davies has also won 10 caps for his country.

Liverpool are in desperate need of filling the left back position, which has proved problematic the last few terms. Currently, the Reds have ex-Newcastle man Jose Enrique in that area, but the injury-prone player is hardly enough for a team that wants to challenge for the league title. The Spaniard needs competition, and Liverpool need cover. Davies could be the answer.

Davies will be Brendan Rodgers` fourth significant summer signing, as he prepares for life without his top scorer last season, Luis Suarez, who looks set for Barcelona. Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Emre Can have all been introduced to Anfield in this transfer window.

Manager Rodgers, who spent time together with Davies at Swansea, is not resting on his laurels in the players market. Liverpool have cash to splash, with Suarez` big money move to Barca all but complete and Champions League participation next term confirmed. Other targets include Benfica winger Lazar Markovic and Belgian World Cup star Divock Origi, both of whom are expected to be announced shortly.

The Reds had a memorable 2013/14 season, and were in pole position to win the league late on. However, they slipped up, quite literally unfortunately, in the run-in and allowed Manchester City to glide past them. Supporters will hope they can challenge for the title again, and lift the Premier League trophy for the first time. The Merseyside club have failed in all of their previous 22 attempts.

But it will not be easy. The loss of one of the world`s best players coupled with Champions League participation will surely hamper their progress. A lot depends on who they bring in during the summer.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are odds-on at 4/5 with Coral to finish in the top four of the Premier League.
