Barry makes Toffees transfer permanent after Man City release
Gareth Barry, who spent the 2013/14 season on loan at Everton (11/2 Premier League top four chances), has now signed permanently for the Toffees on a three-year deal, after his contract ran out at Manchester City.
The 33-year-old former England midfielder becomes Roberto Martinez’s first transfer this summer as they prepare for life in the Europa League, and the player spoke of his move.
“I’m delighted now that everything is signed and I’m going to be spending the next few years at Everton,” Barry said.
“When you are on loan, it is never the same as being a signed player. I was really settled last year – but now I am an official Everton player and it feels really good.
“From the moment I signed last year, I settled in straight away,” he added. “There is a fantastic history here and it was brilliant working with the manager.”
Barry was a key part of the Toffees’ success last term, helping them to a fifth place finish in the Premier League, and gained 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times.
His Spanish manager Martinez, meanwhile, said: “We all know the type of footballer that Gareth is and the type of person that he is. He will fit perfectly well into what we are at Everton. It is a great way to start pre-season.”
The fact that Martinez has given Barry such a long-term contract for his age, suggests the faith he has in the player. He formed a fantastic partnership with James McCarthy last term, and could be seen as someone who can helped guide star prospect and fellow England international Ross Barkley.
Barry has 53 caps for the Three Lions, but has not represented them since 2012. He has not retired from international duty, but Martinez will be hoping to get the best out of him for as long as possible by keeping him fresh.
“In terms of a whole season, last season has to be one of my best – the performances the team put out, the club record points total in the Premier League, the big wins, there were so many positives,” Barry added.
“But that is last season. Now we try to improve on that and if we do improve then we are going to be going to some very good places. The whole squad is always so keen to learn and never satisfied. From the manager right through the coaching staff to the players, everybody wants to improve.
“We will have to treat this season with respect – it is going to be very different with the Europa League and there are a lot more games. But I’m sure the manager will have his plans for that challenge ready and I’m looking forward to it.
“It is good to be in the dressing room alongside so much young talent and whilst they are young, they are ready now and that is fantastic. There is a lot of experience here already and if I can add something to that, it is great.”
