Royal Ascot winner heads betting for Pitmen’s Derby

Published:

Last week’s final Royal Ascot winner Pique Sous heads Coral’s betting for Saturday’s John Smith’s Northumberland Plate at 5-1, in their opening show on the Newcastle highlight.  Angel Gabrial and Suegioo are the 10-1 joint second favourites.

“Having won the longest race of the Royal meeting in good style, the two miles of the Pitmen’s Derby will hold no fears for Pique Sous, and we make him the one to beat with connections looking at a quick reappearance with the seven-year-old,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

Looking further ahead, Richard Hannon remains favourite with Coral, at 11-8, to win the Flat trainers’ title this year, despite being overtaken in the standings by John Gosden, 13-8 second favourite, following last week’s Royal Ascot results.  Two of the title chasing duo’s Ascot winners could clash in next month’s Qipco Sussex Stakes, with Gosden’s Kingman favoured at 1-2 over Toronado, 6-4 and successful for the Hannon team in the race last year, should they meet in the Glorious Goodwood highlight.

“The likes of Kingman, The Fugue and Eagle Top will surely add significant sums to John Gosden’s prize money tally, but Richard Hannon will have plenty of quality of his own to call on, as well a numerically strong squad, so this promises to be a close contest between the two most recent championship winning teams,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“A Qipco Sussex Stakes showdown between the St James’s Palace Stakes and Queen Anne winners would be something to savour, and we would favour the younger colt to come out on top, as Frankel did when he faced Canford Cliffs in the race three years ago,” added Stevens.
