Betting suspended on the colour of the Queen’s hat at Royal Ascot

Bookmaker Coral has suspended betting on the colour of the hat the Queen will wear on the opening day of Royal Ascot, after one customer attempted to place a £1,000 bet on Her Majesty wearing a yellow headpiece tomorrow.

Yellow had been the 5-1 second favourite, behind blue at 4-1, when the betting opened up last week but after the female customer opened a new online account and requested the four-figure bet on yellow, the firm took the decision to suspend betting, fearing the lady had inside information.

“A bet of this amount has instantly set alarm bells ringing, as the average bet on the colour of the Queen’s hat is around £5,” said Coral’s Nicola McGeady.

“Last year, we were forced to suspend betting on the colour of the Queen’s hat after a significant gamble in the Windsor area, and this year’s gamble suggests that someone outside the palace knows more than we do once again,” added McGeady.
