Atleti’s Brazilian defensive duo set for Premier League moves

Brazil World Cup standby defenders Filipe Luis and Miranda, both of Atletico Madrid, are reportedly set for big-money summer moves to the England, after their buy-out clauses have been met.

Premier League 2014/15 fourth-favourites Manchester United (6/1) are desperately seeking new talent at centre back, following the departures of long-term club stalwarts Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Miranda, 29, featured heavily for Atletico in their La Liga title-winning season this term (6/1 to defend the trophy), their first since 1996, and played every minute in the club’s run to the Champions League final.

He is more in the mould of Ferdinand than Vidic, with his composure and ball-playing ability. Despite being at the wrong end of his 20s, he would still be a great fit, and as he is unlikely to go to the World Cup, he will be fresh for the new season.

According to Spanish reports, United have triggered a £24m release clause in Miranda’s contract, and his presence and experience could be just what the Red Devils need, to compliment current younger players Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

His current clubmate and fellow Brazil standby Luis is the subject of a transfer to Chelsea (2/1 to win the league next season), with the Blues set to meet his £19.5m buy-out clause.

With Ashley Cole’s contract running out, Jose Mourinho will be scouring the globe for a replacement for arguably one of the best players of his generation in that position.

Luis, who turns 29 before the new season starts, has been seen as the ideal man to fill such big boots. Like Miranda, he played a crucial part in Atletico’s successful campaign, and was in both legs of the Champions League 3-1 quarter-finals aggregate win over Chelsea.

He could be also follow fellow Brazilian-born Atletico star Diego Costa to Stamford Bridge, with the Spain international striker being heavily linked with the Blues.
