Home challenger Green Flag heads Coral Scottish Grand National betting

| 07.04.2014

*Ayr showpiece the fourth biggest race in sponsor’s shops last year

The Lucinda Russell-trained Green Flag heads the sponsor’s betting for Saturday’s Coral Scottish Grand National at 8-1, following the latest entry stage for a race that last year ranked as the fourth biggest by turnover in Coral shops, behind only the Investec Derby, Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National. Mendip Express is next in the Scottish National betting, along with Roalco De Farges and Sam Winner, the trio all 10-1.

“The Grand National is by far the biggest race of the year, with turnover more than ten times that of the race in second place, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but this Saturday’s Scottish National is increasingly important to us as a driver of turnover, as well as being one of our biggest racing sponsorships,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“Twelve months ago the race attracted the Aintree hero Auroras Encore which undoubtedly boosted interest, although it was the Wiltshire-based Scotsman Alan King who trained the winner Godsmejudge, 14-1 for a repeat win, while Green Flag is the one to beat this time around according to the betting, his Cheltenham Festival fourth behind subsequent Aintree winners Holywell and Ma Filleule looking strong form as connections aim to keep Scotland’s biggest prize at home,” added Stevens.
