Wright not likely to slip up just yet in table opposites battle

Week six of the Premier League Darts features Michael van Gerwen up against giant-killer Wes Newton, while there is a top against bottom battle between surprise leader Peter Wright and withering wizard Simon Whitlock. Adrian Lewis will also hope to overcome Gary Anderson after his Coral UK Open win.

Van Gerwen, who got off to a great start in this year’s competition by gaining victories in his first three, has now gone his last two without a win – following the loss to compatriot Raymond van Barneveld and drawing with self-acclaimed world number one Adrian Lewis.

Dutchman Van Gerwen (odds-on at 2/7 to win) faces another difficult encounter with that of Newton (11/2). The Englishman managed to beat both players his opponent dropped points to, and that would surely give him extra confidence going into this match-up.

Table topper Wright (7/1 for the title) kicks off the night in his head-to-head with Whitlock. The Scot is still the only player yet to suffer defeat and is priced at evens to win again.

Aussie Whitlock occupies the foot of the table, although he did finally get points on the board the previous week against Robert Thornton, but his odds of 13/8 for victory suggest he is likely to lose again. Smart money is not to back him.

Snakebite Wright has surprised many this season so far and, although his form and energy surely must wear off eventually, he should come through this fight with ease.

Coral UK Open champion Lewis faces Anderson (2/1 for victory), but is perhaps surprisingly below him in the table. Despite being a point behind his Scottish opponent, he his odds-on at 4/5 for victory.

Six-time champion Phil Taylor is looking for just his second win of the season, and has a great chance against Dave Chisnall (9/4 to inflict more misery on the greatest player in darts history) – who is one place above him in the table.

The Power goes into week six of the league on the back of his shock loss to TV debutant Aden Kirk in the Coral UK Open, but he is odds-on favourite at 4/6 to record a victory in Nottingham. Taylor is too good a player to fade so dramatically so soon, and his experience and competitive edge should be enough here.

Elsewhere, Van Barneveld, who is one point off the pace at the top, takes on Thornton who has won just once this season. Back the Dutchman at 10/11 for victory, or 12/1 to be league champion for the first time.

Coral are offering special odds this week again for a double Dutch win (Van Gerwen and Van Barneveld) at 6/4. While Lewis and Taylor victories are priced at a more enticing 11/5.
