Spurs hoping to beat rivals Arsenal for Remy signature

Newspaper reports suggest Tottenham (10/1 to finish top four in the league) are set to battle north London rivals Arsenal (40/1 title shots) for the signature of Loic Remy, on loan from QPR to Newcastle United, in the summer.

The French forward is likely to be offloaded at the end of the season as Harry Redknapp plans to ease his club’s wage bill, and could be available for a bargain fee of around £8m. QPR will, however, hope to hold out for as much as £15m.

Remy, 27, is Newcastle’s top scorer this campaign so far with 13 goals in the Premier League, and his performances are attracting suitors from further up the table.

Spurs will be looking to replace their flop striker Roberto Soldado – who has managed to net just six in 24 league appearances – and it would be wise to now go for someone with creditable experience playing in England.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, desperately needs to bolster his options up front, with just Olivier Giroud as the club’s only decent option.

The Magpies are also hoping to turn their temporary player into a permanent purchase, but Remy recently said he would like to be at a top five club next term.

Alan Pardew’s men are currently eighth in the table, but eight points behind Everton in fifth – who have game in hand. Although Newcastle are not likely to bridge that gap with eight games to go, they are almost certain to finish the season in the top 10.

Remy is set to go to the World Cup this year with France as their third-choice striker, behind Giroud and Karim Benzema. His versatility will be useful and played out on the wing for his country on the three occasions he has played for them since October.

Les Blues are priced at 22/1 to win the tournament, and will have to face Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras at the first hurdle in Group E. They are odds-on both to finish top (8/11) or just qualify (1/5) to the knockout round.

Remy is priced at 80/1 to win the competition Golden Boot.
