Tipping Tim’s Weekend Bets
Published:All the talk this week has been about the Superbowl, but I cannot understand why anyone would want to stay up to watch rubbish like that. I can only think of one thing that is worth staying up so late for and, even if I could (which I definitely can’t), I wouldn’t even want to do that for three hours solid. Even National Hunt horse races take too long for my attention span, so I’ll happily be focussing my efforts on the short, sharp bursts of sporting action at Lingfield once again tomorrow.
The race of the day is the six-furlong sprint at 3.45 and, although it is difficult to put a line through anything in this cracking heat, I fancy Noble Deed to out-run big odds. He hasn’t had much luck lately and he really caught the eye behind solid yardstick Trinityelitedotcom here last time, finishing better than anything having been hampered early on. Liam Jones rode him to victory twice for Willie Haggas and, from the handy two-box, he should go close granted a decent passage tomorrow.
The Coral Mobile Handicap (3.10 Lingfield) makes for tough viewing because last week’s nap Moonday Sun will probably be favourite after his gallant second, but he won’t be 14/1 again and I’ll have to begrudgingly desert my old friend given the prices (and, having bet him win only, he’s not my friend anyway). Shavansky caught the eye in a red-hot handicap here a fortnight ago and, with handy claimer Shelley Birkett knocking off her five pounds again, he could be the value tomorrow.
For the Trixie I’m going to take a chance on Top Cop in the 4.20. Ron Harris bought this speed-ball out of Andrew Balding’s yard for 14k in October, and he showed enough pace in a good race at Kempton on his return to suggest that there is still some fire in his belly. This is probably the worst race he has ever contested and, with the cheek pieces back on, he could be back in the game tomorrow.
