Back Suarez to out-score Sturridge in remaining Liverpool games of season

| 25.02.2014

Brendan Rodgers insists that Daniel Sturridge looks like he will score in every game at present and should the striker be on target in Liverpool’s next top-flight encounter at Southampton, he will have set a new Premier League record of scoring in nine successive fixtures.

Sturridge has now netted 18 times in his 19 Premier League appearances this season and it is 200/1 that his scoring run continues with goals in each of Liverpool’s last 11 league fixtures of the campaign.

However, a much more realistic bet appears to be that he reels in Liverpool strike partner Luis Suarez in the race to become the Premier League’s top scorer.

Suarez is still five ahead on 23, but he is on his longest barren streak since joining Liverpool, having gone five games without a goal. He has also scored only once across his last eight appearances.

The result is that Suarez is now only 1/6 to be the Premier League’s top-scorer, having previously been as short as 1/25 before Liverpool faced Arsenal on February 8th.

Sturridge is now only 11/2 after his record-equalling run and given that he seems to be playing on the shoulder of the last man, while Suarez forages a little deeper, the Englishman’s chances should not be discounted.

But it is worth noting that only in one of Liverpool’s eight league games in 2014 so far has Sturridge had more shots than Suarez, suggesting that it is only a matter of time before the Uruguayan gets back on the scoring bandwagon again.

Therefore, Suarez should still be regarded as the better bet at 1/1 to score more than Sturridge across Liverpool’s final 11 Premier League matches of the season. Sturridge is 4/5 in the same market.

Alternatively, it is 6/4 that Suarez scores 30 goals or more this season, with Sturridge available at 25/1.
