No player is bigger than the club is one statement that is somewhat regularly offered in football circles, but the speculated new contract offer to Wayne Rooney suggests that he is exceedingly close to crossing that line.

Rooney is out of contract at the end of next season and the initial feeling was that he would wait until the end of the current campaign before considering an extension, after he had played at the World Cup and knew if Manchester United had qualified for the Champions League again or not.

It is 11/5 in the Premier League betting that Man Utd finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.

However, in a bid to show how indispensable Rooney is to Man Utd, it is being suggested that Rooney will have numerous perks in the next contract offer, giving him the VIP treatment that he never received under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Alongside earning the best part of £300,000 a week, Rooney will be given the captain’s armband in the near future at Old Trafford and arguably most surprisingly, he will have advanced notice in relation to spending plans and transfers targets.

Rooney has questioned the club’s ambition before, but having been told early on about the intent to sign Juan Mata and being kept in the loop in relation to other targets, this must be a boost towards his prospects of staying.

Despite this, Rooney’s odds haven’t changed from 2/7 that he will still be a Man Utd player at the start of the 2014/15 Premier League season.

In terms of the alternate options, Chelsea’s interest is well known from the summer, but Man Utd are unwilling to sell to a title rival, even though Mata has just made the opposite switch. It is 5/1 that Rooney signs for Chelsea in the summer.

Meanwhile, he seems a back-up option to Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero on the list of Real Madrid’s transfer targets.
