Can Luis Suarez break the Premier League goalscoring record?

Luis Suarez will never be everybody’s cup of tea, but when it comes to goalscoring you just have to take your hat off to him.

Just a few months ago, the Uruguayan was sitting out a lengthy ban and seemingly determined to leave Anfield and English football. Now, he is the toast of the Premiership, odds-on to be voted Player of the Year and now 4/5 to break the goalscoring record in a 38-game season after notching his 20th of the season in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Hull on Saturday.

Andy Cole and Alan Shearer both top scored with 34 in the early nineties, but that was over a 42-match season. Since the Premier League was cut down to 20 teams in 1995, nobody has bettered 31 – Shearer again in 1996 and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008. Kevin Phillips (2000), Thierry Henry (2004) and Robin Van Persie (2012) have all gone close with 30.

Suarez’s achievement so far is all the more impressive when taking into account that he missed the first five games of the season. 20 goals from 15 games is some going and it is certainly not in the least bit far-fetched to think that he can manage another 12 in the 18 games that remain. In fact, looked at it that way, he’s a bit of a shoo-in, barring injury or suspension.
