Mourinho will survive fourth Premier League December unbeaten

| 05.12.2013

Although not as impressive as Jose Mourinho’s record of 67 unbeaten home games in the Premier League, it is also somewhat remarkable that the Chelsea boss has never suffered a defeat in the division at any ground in the month of December.

This record was extended to 19 games after the 4-3 triumph at Sunderland and the big question now is can Mourinho get through a December in the Premier League for a fourth time without suffering a defeat?

7/4 in the Premier League odds says he can, with Chelsea still having five games to play before New Year’s Day.

The omens do look good that the record stays intact, with Stoke the first team standing in Chelsea’s way in this particular gauntlet.

Chelsea have never lost in the Premier League at the Britannia and Stoke have only beaten two opponents at home this season – bottom pair Crystal Palace and Sunderland.

Stoke have only managed one goal across their five other home games too when facing opposition from outside of the relegation places.

After Stoke, Chelsea should have a simple home fixture with Crystal Palace, who may be improving with clean sheets in three of their last four, but they have only managed one goal in seven games with opposition currently positioned in 11th or higher in the top-flight standings.

Chelsea have additionally already comfortably beaten Hull and Cardiff at home, who along with Palace earned promotion to the Premier League last season.

Stoke’s odds are 9/2 to end Mourinho’s unbeaten December record, with Crystal Palace priced at 12/1 to win at Stamford Bridge and end the streak.

The biggest threat to the record this season has to be a visit to league-leaders Arsenal, who have won all six home games since the reverse to Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.

However, Mourinho has avoided a defeat against the Gunners in the previous three Decembers he has managed in the Premier League, including twice away from home.

Chelsea are also unbeaten in three at the Emirates, which includes a Capital One Cup success earlier in this campaign.

It is 13/8 that Arsenal are the first team to beat Chelsea this December.

Following Arsenal, Chelsea host a Swansea team that does have a Stamford Bridge victory on their resume from the Capital One Cup in recent seasons, although Michael Laudrup’s men have not even managed a goal, let alone a positive result, away to any of the top eight this campaign.

The Swans are 18/1 to inflict a first December defeat on Mourinho on Boxing Day.

Rounding off the month is a home game with Liverpool, who are yet to beat any of the top half away this season. But, Chelsea have only triumphed once in their last five home meetings with the Reds.

Liverpool’s odds are 8/1 to be the first team to beat Chelsea under Mourinho in December.
