Van Persie to torture Spurs again for Manchester United

SPORTSBOOK ODDS

Manchester United are unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions and David Moyes’ side should be backed at 13/8 to beat Spurs on Sunday.

United have taken eight points from their last four Premier League visits to White Hart Lane and the defending champions come into this game on the back of a fine Champions League win at Bayer Leverkusen.

A 5-0 win – recorded in a canter – was unexpected, as was the list of goalscorers with Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling joining Antonio Valencia and Nani on the scoresheet.

Neither winger is prolific whilst these were the first goals for Evans and Smalling since December 2012 and September 2011 respectively.

Bet on Van Persie to score first at 6/1

The majority of United’s 20 goals this season have been scored Wayne Rooney (6) and Robin Van Persie (7).

The Dutchman is struggling with an injury so the emphasis could be on Rooney again and the England man can be backed to score first at odds of 6/1.

He did so in this fixture last season however only one of his Premier League goals this season – last weekend at Cardiff – has been the first strike of the game.

If Van Persie make the starting line-up then he might be the better option.

Bet on Man Utd to win at 13/8

The former Arsenal man loves to score against their rivals Spurs and four of his six goals in the Premier League have been the first of the match; he is also 6/1 to repeat the feat.

The Red Devils may have lost at rivals Man City and Liverpool but, whilst Spurs are only a one point behind United, they are not realistic title challengers at this stage.

Whilst the visitors will bring momentum from their midweek win, the effect might not be quite so pronounced for Tottenham after their Europa League win.

Opponents Tromso were no real threat and half of the team that Andre Villas-Boas put out in Norway won’t be involved on Sunday.

Instead he will welcome back Jermain Defoe, Kyle Walker and Paulinho into the squad and the Portuguese manager will be hopeful that his side can buck a Premier League run which has seen them drop eight points from their last three matches.

Bet on Rooney to score first at 6/1

The tabloid vultures are circling following the 6-0 defeat by Man City last Sunday – a result which Villas-Boas described as ‘shameful.’

However Spurs have only played one of the ‘big four’ teams at White Hart Lane this season and the 1-1 result against Chelsea was a fair one.

The home side will be without Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen due to injury and the main criticism of Villas-Boas has been the isolation of star striker Roberto Soldado up-front.

The Spaniard was signed for £26 million from Valencia in the summer but wingers Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend have not supplied the striker with a plethora of opportunities.

A whopping 57% of Tottenham’s shots have come from outside of the area but the most startling fact is that whilst Spurs have had the most shots per game in the Premier League (18.3), they have only scored nine goals which is only better than Hull, West Ham, Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

These two teams have been very closely matched over the years – each side has won 25 times in 76 games in London – but United look better equipped to handle this huge game.
