Arsenal have awesome record following League Cup defeats

Last Tuesday in the Capital One Cup, Chelsea’s second string gave Arsenal a masterclass.

To be fair, Chelsea’s second XI contains enough talent to make decent inroads into the World Cup, let alone the Capital One, but not so long ago, the League Cup was Arsene Wenger’s laboratory.

While the professor strove to build a team that could never be beaten, that trophy was the proving ground for his youngsters. Lower division teams were pushed trembling through the bars of their cage, where Wenger’s youngsters first mesmerised them with their fancy flicks and Road Runner acceleration, then tore them to shreds.

But not only did the experiment fail to feed the stars of the future into the Arsenal side, bigger teams had the nerve come and pick off the talent from the first team as well.

So much for the experiment.

However, while the League Cup is famously a trophy that has eluded the intense Frenchman, for years, league cup exits have been swiftly avenged by Arsenal with a win in the following game.

In fact, Arsenal have not lost in the league directly following a League Cup defeat since 1995.

(There is one wrinkle in that phenomenal record, in that they lost following an exit in the semi-finals to Wigan in 2006, but they actually WON the second leg of that tie, so the trend holds.)

During that 17-year streak they have won 13 and drawn three, with six of those wins coming in the last seven years.

Recommended bets

Arsenal to win @ 6/5

The Gunners are 6/5 to beat Liverpool in the Saturday lunchtime fixture, even though a win would see Liverpool overtake them at the top of the table, at least until Chelsea decide what to do with Newcastle. Arsenal are overdue a home league win against Liverpool, having only managed one in the last six years, and that back in 2010, four games ago.

Arsenal to score less than 3 goals @ 1/5

A grim price, granted (if you wish to oppose it, the overs are 10/3), but Arsenal have not gone goal bonkers against Liverpool for a while now. They scored four in a famous draw in 2009, but other than that, haven’t scored more than two home or away vs Liverpool since 2006. In their only game against top six opposition so far this season they beat Spurs 1-0.

Both teams to score @ 4/9

Although this year Arsenal haven’t been the defensive comedy of recent seasons, they are still prone to mistakes or leaving themselves a little exposed at the back as the entire team charges enthusiastically upfield. They’ve only registered two clean sheets in the league, at home to Spurs and away to toothless Crystal Palace, and conceded in both their league cup games, and in two of their three Champions League group games.
