Tipping Tim’s St Leger Weekend Tips

The St Leger is such an inferior Classic that even Godolphin manages to win it every now and then. Last year Encke showed remarkable improvement to nick it for them at 25/1 and, with a three-pronged attack primed to strike this time, the boys in blue will be hoping for back-to-back wins in the world’s oldest Classic tomorrow.

I just about prefer Secret Number of their three, but I’m not sold on any of them my nap in the big race is York eye-catcher Foundry. Aidan O’Brien’s son of Galileo has presumably had his problems but he ran a lovely race on his belated seasonal debut and, having won on bad ground as a juvenile, he should have no problems with the prevailing conditions. He comes here fresher than most and, with this year’s Derby not really working out, this different line of form might prove good enough.

As a salute to Sheikh Mohammed the next best this week is a Godolphin horse on the Leger card; namely Lockwood in the Park Stakes at 2.05. Godolphin does very well with older Group horses (partly because everyone else retires their beasts at three) and this ex-Andre Fabre gelding is really starting to find his stride now. After a couple of impressive wins he looks ready for this step up in grade and, aside from solid favourite Gregorian, there aren’t many to be scared of in this field.

For the Trixie I am going to take a chance on Global Village in the last at Doncaster (6.05). Brian Ellison’s veteran has been ticking over for a couple of months on fast ground but, with the yard in form and the rain pouring down, much better can be expected tomorrow. The son of Dubai Destination is a bit of a tool when the mud flies and, off the same mark as when getting chinned in the Lincoln, he looks weighted to strike this weekend.

Good luck with all your bets on Leger day!
