Phiz to strike for Gosden on opening day of Cambridgeshire meeting

| 25.09.2013

It is often said that you should follow a filly in form at this time of year and John Gosden’s Phiz certainly comes into that category. The daughter of Galileo made little impression on her first two starts but won her maiden at Lingfield in August before putting up a much-improved effort at Doncaster.

Sent off at 14-1, she made rapid headway early in the straight and William Buick thought he had everything covered. A glance behind revealed that Jamie Spencer was still sitting with a double handful on Oaks third The Lark and his filly found the better turn of foot.

The pair finished four lengths clear of the third and Phiz will be hard to beat in the Listed race at 3.10 on Thursday. The big race of the opening day of the meeting is the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at 3.40.

Cable Bay puts Doncaster’s Champagne Stakes form to the test after finishing third to Outstrip whilst Championship bids to bounce back from a disappointing run at Royal Ascot. Godolphin relies on the unbeaten Silent Bullet but the one to be on could be the William Haggas-trained Nezar.

This colt was always struggling over six furlongs at York but finished strongly to take third behind stable companion Haikbidiac. He was much better suited by the seven furlongs at Chester last time when defying top weight in a nursery and looks certain to run well again here.

The Jockey Club Rose Bowl at 4.15 looks wide open but plenty will want to be on Repeater after his eye-catching run in the Doncaster Cup. He loomed up full of running that day, only to fade into third behind Times Up.

Ryan Moore will be delaying his challenge as late as possible and has Caucus and Genzy to beat. The latter would be a big threat if he could reproduce his Ebor run when second to Tiger Cliff.

Selections: 2.00 King’s Land, 2.35 Photography, 3.10 Phiz (NAP), 3.40 Nezar (nb), 4.15 Repeater, 4.50 Makafeh, 5.25 Floating Along
