Channon aims to strike it rich with Jallota in Newmarket feature

| 20.09.2013

Mick Channon’s Jallota has only won once of his seven starts this season but has been racing against the best. His latest effort came when finishing a fine fourth in the Prix Morny at Deauville.

That race could arguably have been the hottest two-year-old race of the season to date with No Nay Never beating Vorda and Rizeena. He is officially rated around a stone superior to his rivals in the £100,000 Tattersalls Millions Median Auction Trophy and can gain reward for his consistency.

Trainer Mark Johnston has five chances to land the valuable prize with Lanark (Joe Fanning) and Lyn Valley (Johnny Murtagh) the pick on form. Richard Hannon has booked Ryan Moore to partner Bon Voyage who is still a maiden after two promising efforts.

He was beaten by 33-1 shot Learaig on his debut at Newmarket before finishing third to another shock winner in 25-1 Stealth Missile at Ascot. Hannon is also represented by Constantine and Speed The Plough.

Godolphin’s Wedding Ring has similar claims in the fillies race having run well in Group 3 and Listed company. She beat Ihtimal on her racecourse debut but was beaten into third place by that smart filly in the Sweet Solera Stakes here last month.

Charlie Appleby’s filly was not disgraced when three-lengths third to Joyeuse at Salisbury on her most recent start and she sets the standard here. Ryan Moore partners Doncaster winner Aqlaam Vision but she may possibly have preferred a softer surface to bring her stamina into play.

There are some decent maiden fillies in the opening race at 1.55 with Andrew Balding’s Casual Smile expected to get off the mark after two decent efforts. She may have been unlucky at Ascot last time when she was repeatedly hampered in the closing stages.

The Cesarewitch Trial at 3.40 could be a useful stepping-stone for Amanda Perrett’s Arch Villain who shaped encouragingly when third at Goodwood. That was his first race for a month and he will strip fitter on Saturday.

Selections: 1.55 Casual Smile (NAP), 2.30 Wedding Ring, 3.05 Jallota (nb), 3.40 Arch Villain, 4.15 Midnight Ruler, 4.50 Light From Mars, 5.20 Astonishing, 5.55 Yeager
